Open Question: Help! - Need ideas for my Spanish cultural project...?

I'm taking spanish this semester and one of the projects we're doing is a spanish cultural project. My teacher is letting me pick any topic or category I want. He gave us examples like: if you adore to paint, paint a picture of somerwhere in Mexico. Or if you adore to cook, make a spanish dish. If you adore music, go to a spanish speaking concert. I want to do something with animals. Problem is, I don't know what. He said whatever we do, we have to have pictures taken of us of whatever it is we're doing. (like taking a picture of yourself at the concert) I was thinking something with Vaqueros because I adore horses (and cowboys LOL), but where would I go, or what would I do to turn that into a presentation? Any ideas? Also, it doesn't HAVE to be animal related, but I want to do something that I'm ineterested in. A lot of the students in my class are going to Alvera road in LA, but I don't want to do something that everyone else is going to do. Thanks!!!

"I got a phone call asking me to send $2,500 to ransom him," the 77-year-old mom said, clutching the last letter she received from her 43-year-old son. "I didn't have the money. I don't know if he is alive or dead." Cruz fears her son may be one the 72 migrants found shot to death in northern Mexico last week. She is one of hundreds of people who streamed to government offices in Central America after news of the massacre spread, searching for news of relatives who went missing after setting out through Mexico hoping to reach the United States. In the overwhelming majority of cases, family members' descriptions did not match the bullet-ridden bodies found in heaps at a ranch in the state of Tamaulipas. Instead, rights workers say, the missing migrants may be part of a huge toll of hundreds, and perhaps thousands, of migrants killed by organized crime gangs and whose bodies may have been hacked up, dissolved in acid or buried in unmarked paupers graves. The true number of undocumented migrants killed in Mexico in recent years may never be known, but they would almost certainly dwarf the number discovered last week. Mexico's National Human Rights Commission said there were witness accounts of 198 mass kidnappings involving 9,758 migrants in a six month-period in 2009. Just Tuesday, police in the Mexican resort of Cancun rescued six Cuban migrants who had been captured by a gang and were being held prisoner in a home close the city's airport, said Quintana Roo state police director Enrique Alberto Sanmiguel. He said the captors were demanding $8,000 to $10,000 from the Cubans' families in the United States. Activists say drug cartels like Mexico's Zetas _ the gang blamed in the Tamaulipas massacre _ frequently kill one or two from each group to scare the relax into asking relatives to meet ransom demands. Almost 200 relatives showed up at the offices of the Honduras' foreign ministry in Tegucigalpa saying their loved ones had . So far only 21 bodies found at the massacre site have been identified as Hondurans; 19 are of other nationalities, and 32 are unidentified. In Guatemala, relatives have called the country's foreign ministry to report about 30 missing migrants since the massacre. The missing migrants had set out to cross Mexico months ago _ in some cases, years ago. Tapachula officials were not immediately available to comment. But the spokesman for Arriaga, another Chiapas railway town, Alfredo Ovilla, said there may be as many as 50 to 100 migrants in graves there after violence in earlier years targeted those riding trains. He said increased police and migrant-protection patrols had reduced the violence. On Tuesday, Mexico announced the outlines of a plan to reduce violence against migr , by helping build more shelters, keeping a closer watch on railway lines on which migrants travel, and using information campaigns "to discourage undocumented migration" and inform migrants of their rights. Mexico's Foreign Relations Department could not provide figures on the number of foreign migrants reported missing or dead in the country, though it keeps a careful accounting of Mexican migrants found dead in the southwestern United States _ 369 in 2009. Many of the Central American migrants' home countries also don't keep track of those missing in Mexico. Andrea Furlan, a spokeswoman for Guatemala's foreign ministry, said reports arrive in of migrants being tortured or raped or having disappeared, but seldom with the detail that would allow authorities to take action. "People are not in the habit of filing crime reports," Furlan said. Hey, I'm a first-generation Mexican-American. Born and raised in California. Just curious, is the word "gringo" only used to describe White/Caucasian Americans? Or can a Mexican-American, Chinese-American, Italian-American, African-American, etc be referred to as gringos too. Recently, I was in Mexico City visiting family. A cousin of mine was talking about the gringos. But I wasn't quite sure if he was talking about white people or just people from the United States in general. Am I considered a gringo? Even though I am Mexican-American, not white/Caucasian.

My dad raised us alone in Mexico, as my mom left to the US. He's a military doctor, so he was quite strict and not the nice of dad who would hug us or kiss us. Since he grew up very needy and he built his patrimony with great efforts, he was always extremely miser, he never gave us any gift not even in christmas, he said he had to keep money to give us a better life. He would spend most of the time in the bathroom, reading. He would receive mad if we interrupted him and when used the bathroom we did it in his presence. One day he dropped a bill to the toilet, he told me to receive it out, despite the fact that the bowl was filled with floating feces, he did it to show me how difficult it is to earn money. I grew up with the odor of his feces. I can't receive along with him.

Open Question: Just Why Was In That Mexican helicopter spotted in south Texas?

Federal officials confirmed two Mexican military helicopter incursions took place in skies over Starr and Hidalgo County today but are asking the public not to be alarmed. Local law enforcement officials were put on alert after a Mexican military helicopter was spotted in Alto Bonito and headed east into Hidalgo County. Sources told Action 4 News tha tthe helicopter flew from Alto Bonito and then over Sullivan City and La Joya around 1 p.m. Thursday. Officials with U.S. Customs and Border Protection Air and Marine Operations confirmed that there were two helicopter incursions -- one between 9 and 10 am. and then another at 1 p.m. Thursday. Air and Marine Operations spokesman Juan Muñoz-Torres told Action 4 News that the agency was informed about the incursions by the Mexican government. Muñoz-Torres said the public should not be alarmed by the incursions. The Air and Marine Operations spokesman said that a long-standing agreement between the United States, Mexico and Canada allows for temporary incursions for medical or law enforcement purposes. Rio Grande Valley residents have reported at least four Mexican helicopter incursions since March in communities along the border from Brownsville to Zapata. Alto Bonito is located off U.S. Expressway 83 east of Rio Grande City and about two to three miles north of the Rio Grande river. Muñoz-Torres said Mexican military helicopter have increased due to the ongoing drug war south of the border. The Air and Marine Operations spokesman said Mexican military helicopters cross the border for intelligence purposes allowing officials to receive another view or perspective of their target area. "They are not performing operations in the United States," Muñoz-Torres said. Zapata County Sheriff Sigifredo Gonzalez told Action 4 News that he doesn't buy it. Gonzalez said federal law enforcement officials did not inform local law enforcement officials about the incursions in today's incident and past incidents. "They need to provide information to local law enforcement," Gonzalez said. "When people call us, we can tell them not to be alarmed." Sheriff Gonzalez said Zapata residents witnessed a Mexican helicopter fly across Falcon Lake and hovering over a home. Gonzalez said federal officials never provided an explanation for that incident or others. Sheriff Gonzalez said he doesn't believe the Mexican helicopters are crossing to receive a different angle or view of the Mexican said. He said the helicopters in the Zapata incident and others are flying below the radar. "If that's the case, they need to flya a little bit higher," Gonzalez said. Muñoz-Torres said the agency is looking to improve communications about the incursions through interagency task forces. He said the Mexican military has a liaison at an Air and Marine Operations facility in California. Open Question: Need help with universities! USC, Cornell,etc...?

So, I'm in my last year of high school and I want to know if I have a good chance of getting into universities like USC. I did 9th grade in Texas and then moved to Mexico where I did 1 year (I still need another year though cause it's a 2 year high school) My unweighted gpa is 3.4 and I will take the SAT in October. The reason my gpa is low its because I moved to Mexico and the whole language thing messed me up cause I know spanish but don't know how to write it and you know depression sort of contributed to it. I have bilingual clases which are like advanced clases sort of (there's no ap or honors) but i took a couple of pre ap in 9th grade and i was a year ahead in math when i lived in texas. I go to the nursing home every 4 months to help and I actually adore going there :D I also try to convince people around the school to make more visits to the nursing home, orphanages, and like just places where we could help but they don't really hear or care :( I did journalism in 9th grade and photography, tech club, and yearbook but its difficult to do more stuff here in mexico. I play soccer and basketball but not in a team o anything and I play the guitar, violin, and the drums.... Do I have a good chance of getting into USC? be honest please... and sorry for any misspelled words...

Open Question: Reykjavik,Iceland in September??????!!!!!!!!! SOMEONE WHO IS FROM OR BEEN THERE PLEASE RESPOND?

I plan to go to Reykjavik for about 5 days around September 22-27. Is it ok to go there now after the Volcano? Is it dangerous there for BLACK American men? Do the women there like BLACK American men? Is it very expensive? What is every to do there? What is the weather like at the end of September? I know it's a little icy but is it still ok to go in September? Does it rain and snow a lot in September? Do they have a nice zoo and aquarium? Are the people hospitable towards Americans? Do they talk English well? I'm not a trouble maker nor I don't drink smoke, and not a party person but if something was to happen to me to where I went to jail will the US help me and be notified or is it like Mexico and Japan where the US can't do anything about it? Certain countries have laws with the US where we are protected and the US can do something for us to receive out of jail if an American was to receive into trouble but I forget the name of this act.Someone who is from there or who have experience please answer. *UPDATE* Is it dark most of the day in September?

Open Question: Mexicans from Mexico or S. Californians, where's good Mexican in NYC?

If you're not from Mexico or Southern California you're not allowed to answer, sorry!! In Southern California I could pretty much go to any random Mexican place and 8 or 9 times out of 10 it would be delicious, amazing, made by Mexicans. In NYC, 70% of the "Mexican" places are run by Chinese people and at 80% of the places the food SUCKS. In every of NYC there has got to be at least 2-3 real Mexican places like I had back home. Some Mexicans from S. California or Mexico that know how to cook must have opened a place by accident with 10 million potential people. Please someone help me. I need to eat a real taco or cheese enchilada before I wither and die out here.
